Toward the International Expansion and Development of Clinical Engineering in Japan Aiming for the Global Expansion and Development of Japanese Clinical Engineering Technology

In Japan, clinical engineers possess both medical and engineering knowledge and skills, and are permitted to assist in medical treatment, such as operating life support equipment, under the direction of a physician. The world's only national qualification systemis.

They are healthcare professionals specializing in the field of medical device-based treatment, and they play a pivotal role in the Medical Device Management Office, which oversees the comprehensive management of medical devices used across all hospital departments. Thirty years after the enactment of the Clinical Engineering Technologist Act, this profession has become indispensable to modern medicine—which relies heavily on medical devices—contributing to patient safety and the advancement of medical technology.
Thirty years after the enactment of the Clinical Engineering Technicians Act, this profession has become indispensable to modern medicine, which relies on medical equipment, and contributes to the improvement of medical safety and medical technology.

In recent years, as the global healthcare industry continues to expand, demand for medical devices has been growing rapidly even in developing and emerging countries; however, the technical expertise required to properly operate and maintain these devices remains insufficient. Furthermore, training programs for personnel responsible for the maintenance and management of medical devices are also severely lacking.

Japan’s healthcare delivery system is generally based on team-based care that relies on collaboration among professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and clinical engineers, and is highly regarded worldwide.

The Japan Society of Clinical Engineers has established an International Exchange Committee to participate in relevant international conferences in Europe and the United States, as well as ISO-related meetings; to foster exchanges with clinical engineers in various countries; and to provide technical assistance to ASEAN nations and China. In particular, there is a growing demand for Japanese clinical engineering technology from emerging economies.

These activities are listed in the government policy:To promote the international expansion of Japanese pharmaceuticals, medical devices, medical technologies, and medical services in response to the needs of emerging and developing countries. This project aligns with the stated criteria and contributes to strengthening the international competitiveness of Japan's excellent medical device industry.

Therefore, in order to further enhance international activities, and with the participation of external academics, individuals with experience in international exchange, and representatives from the medical device industry, the following projects will be undertaken with the aim of contributing to the improvement of health and medical care by promoting and raising awareness of clinical engineering technology as a human interface between medical devices and life sciences in countries around the world.International Foundation for the Promotion of Clinical EngineeringWe have newly established "[Name of organization/organization]".

We kindly ask all concerned parties to understand the purpose of this establishment and request your continued support.
