Report on the signing of an MOU and participation in TICAD8 in the Republic of Tunisia, Africa (August 28, 2022 onwards)
1. Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Tunis Hermanar's Tunis Institute of Medical Technology (ISTMT).
The University of Tunis El Manar and the Institute of Advanced Medical Technology (ISTMT) affiliated with the University of El Manar in the Republic of Tunisia, along with the International Foundation for the Promotion of Clinical Engineering, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the presence of Ambassador Shinsuke Shimizu of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Tunisia. The press conference was broadcast on local television.
In response to a growing demand from the Republic of Tunisia for treatments using advanced medical devices, ISTMT UTM established the country's first Biomedical Engineering (BME) course at a national university to train technicians capable of properly handling medical devices. The BME course curriculum and lecture syllabus were jointly developed by ISTMT UTM and our foundation.
In the future, our foundation plans to dispatch clinical engineers from within Japan to serve as instructors and to provide training to local teachers. Since it will still take time to establish a qualification that allows for clinical work similar to that of clinical engineers in Japan, the main duties for the time being are expected to be the maintenance, inspection, and management of medical equipment. However, students will study both medicine and engineering and aim to find employment at hospitals or medical equipment manufacturers.
